Floor-based Training for SCI rehab:

For in-clinic and at-home SCI rehab programming

a 2-hour live staff development experience

Programming for spinal cord injury (SCI) clients can be challenging, especially when you have such a wide variety of abilities and every day is different.

Is there a smarter way to organize our ideas into an effective and progressive system?

Make programming & home assignments a breeze.

What do you do when a client pops into your schedule and you don’t have time to come up with a session program? If only there was a template or an exercise protocol to follow…

The motor development progression (MDP) offers us a program template that can easily be modified for each individual, saving you time and energy when programming for clients. The basic exercises are tried and true: it’s the same movement progression you used as a child to learn how to walk and move.

In this workshop, participants will learn the value of MDP and floor-based exercises as they pertain to recovery after SCI. With equal parts lecture and lab, we’ll explore the progression interactively with your SCI clients in real-time – including ways to easily modify or challenge each stage in the progression. The aim of this ground-up approach is for clients to develop movement patterns, stability, mobility, and strength all proportionally, rather than over-using certain areas and neglecting others.

You and your client will finish feeling confident in the trajectory of their rehab program and have many examples of at-home exercises they can practice between sessions.

In this presentation, we will:

  • Discuss why floor-based training is an accessible and sustainable option (for both the client and trainer) in SCI rehab programs.

  • Understand the basic motor development progression (MDP) – postures & transitions – as it pertains to full-body integration after SCI.

  • Learn how to apply the MDP to all clients: from non-ambulatory to fully ambulatory, from cervical-level SCI to cauda-equina injuries.

  • Learn how to use the basic MDP as a template for session planning and at-home program design.

  • Explore modifications and “add-ons” from the basic MDP template to accommodate different client abilities.

  • Discover specific floor-based exercises which can mitigate neurological tone and spasticity.

… all in a fun and interactive 2-hour presentation!

Changing the paradigm on SCI rehab: We’re all in this together.

FAQs

  • Absolutely, in fact, I encourage it! I just request a client summary prior to the presentation to organize my thoughts and practical applications.

  • Typically, no. This presentation is designed for LIVE interaction. We do have plans to produce it as an online, self-paced course in the future.

  • I’ll share the PDF of the visual presentation, plus a handout outlining a general floor-based program to guide your staff in program design.

  • Over Zoom! Since 2020, I’ve been coaching individuals with SCI and practitioners remotely with surprising success.

  • Short answer, no. You should carve out 2 hours of your time for this presentation. Cutting this presentation short means you will not be able to fully grasp the nuances and practice the concepts in action with your clients (the application is the best part!)
